Authorities in Florida have charged a 39-year-old mother, Shanae Davis, after a handgun was discovered inside her 2-year-old son's lunchbox at Jackson's Daycare Center in Riviera Beach. The incident led to several charges against Davis, including allowing a minor to obtain a firearm and child neglect.
The discovery of the 9mm Glock 43 handgun inside the toddler's lunchbox caused alarm among the daycare staff and parents. One parent expressed shock, highlighting the importance of ensuring children's safety at school.
According to police reports, Davis admitted that the gun belonged to her and that she usually kept it in her vehicle's glove box. Due to recent break-ins in her apartment complex, she had started bringing the gun inside her home. On the night of March 14, she inadvertently placed the gun in her son's lunchbox and forgot to remove it the next morning.
Law enforcement was alerted, and Davis was promptly arrested. She was later released on bail after posting bond. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office emphasized the significance of gun safety, warning about the potential dangers of negligence in handling firearms.
Despite the daycare owner opting not to press charges, the state prosecutor's office decided to pursue legal action against Davis. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible gun ownership and storage to prevent accidents and harm.
