A mother and her 9-year-old son visiting New York City from Australia were rescued by bystanders on Christmas Day after they were trapped under a taxi that plowed into a crowded sidewalk, injuring six people.

The crash occurred on Dec. 25 near Herald Square, when a 58-year-old taxi driver suffered a medical emergency while driving near the iconic Macy's department store, ABC7 New York reported.

The cab veered onto the crowded sidewalk, striking pedestrians, including the mother and her child, before coming to a stop.

Bystanders, including tourists and local workers, quickly intervened, shutting off the taxi's engine and lifting the vehicle to free the trapped pair, as reported by PIX11.

The boy suffered a leg injury, while his mother sustained a head injury. Both were taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment.

Three other women, ages 19, 37 and 49, were also injured but declined medical attention. The driver was hospitalized and is expected to recover. The victims are expected to recover from their injuries, with the mother and child receiving continued care at the hospital.

Police have stated that no criminal charges are anticipated.
