MOTD's Ian Wright in car crash on way to Manchester amid aftermath of Storm Eunice

Football pundit Ian Wright was involved in a car accident earlier today as he made his way to the Match Of The Day studios in Greater Manchester.

The 58-year-old former Arsenal striker praised the 'brilliant' emergency services for attending to the scene, which took place on the M56.

Ian confirmed no one was hurt - but warned other motorists to be careful following the aftermath of Storm Eunice.

Still with a smile on his face, the star posed for a selfie in front of the wrecked car.

Posting it to Twitter, the presenter wrote: "Not a straightforward trip up for @BBCMOTD!

"Thankfully nobody was hurt.

"Be careful out there, lots of water on the road.

"Thank you to my amazing driver Jay and the brilliant emergency services".

One fan responded: "Thank God everyone is safe" while another responded: "Protect this man at all costs. Much love Wrighty, glad no one got hurt."

MOTD co-host Alan Shearer cheekily responded: "Jeez. And you made it in time to see the toon score".

Travellers are continuing to face disruption across the UK following deadly Storm Eunice, which brought chaos as it battered most parts of the country on Friday.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps today said services are gradually returning to normal but warned travellers to expect further disruption this weekend.

He told the BBC: “Trains are in the wrong locations, debris is still being removed from our roads, airports are expected to be very busy – people catching up with flights – and potentially queues at ports. Expect disruption, do check before you travel.

“We’re still on a yellow warning today as well, so still windy out there, but things are returning to normal.”

The effects of the storm also took its toll on Saturday’s Football League programme as high winds and snow wreaked havoc.

Salford’s Sky Bet League Two clash with Crawley was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

The playing surface at the Peninsula Stadium was judged to be unplayable after a second inspection following continued heavy rain.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “The surface passed a preliminary pitch inspection by the match official at 9am, with the officials due to return at 12:30pm.

“However rainfall continuously fell throughout the morning and when we requested that the match referee return earlier to re-assess and he deemed the surface unplayable.”

Blackburn’s Sky Bet Championship clash with Millwall, which was called off less than 45 minutes before it was due to kick off after surviving an earlier inspection, was the biggest casualty, with conditions worsening as the day wore on.
