'Most perfect son and brother you could ever wish for' dies aged 26

Just nine weeks ago a close-knit farming family lost "the most perfect son and brother you could ever wish for".

Gruffydd Lloyd Parry, or Gruff as he was known by his family and friends, died at his home in in Pentrecelyn, Ruthin, Denbighshire, on February 11. He's thought to have taken his own life. He was just 26 years old.

Now his family – mum Carys, dad Bryn, sisters Miriam and Hawys and brother Ifan – have written a heartbreaking tribute to him.

Their message is simple – just talk to those loved ones around you.

Gruff, a "fun-loving" farmer and member of Ruthin RFC, gave no indication that he was unhappy. The family are still in disbelief that Gruff has left them

But since his death friends have rallied round and donated more than £5,000 to the DPJ Foundation in his memory. They do not want recognition for this – only for people to remember that if you are worried about someone or feel concerned that someone may be at risk then they should take action.

The DPJ Foundation is a cause close to their heart. It is a charity set up by Emma Picton-Jones after she lost her own husband, a farmer, to suicide.

It's mission is to get farmers and those in rural areas to open up and talk about whatever might be bothering them.

This is the Parry family's message.

"We would like you to know a little about Gruff (Gruffydd Lloyd Parry). He was 26 years of age and the most perfect son and brother you could ever wish for.

"He always wanted to farm and as a young boy had a passion for birds and poultry of all kind. He loved nature and was always planting trees, bulbs and had his own veggie patch. He looked forward to lambing every year and took charge. We were due to lamb 500 ewes this year. He loved his sheep dogs and was a keen trainer and spent hours after a days work on the fields with a small flock of sheep training his dogs.

"He was a member of a wonderful young choir and enjoyed their weekly practices. His choir friends joked that he was always the first to arrive at their rehearsals. He also really enjoyed the many social evenings they had, they all became very close and would meet up very often or converse on social media.

"We run an egg farm after diversifying from dairy when Gruff was nine years of age. He was so excited when this happened even though he did a little relief milking when he was older. He also sheared every year with a couple of friends.

"We lost Gruff nine weeks ago.

"Most of all he was a loving son and brother which we miss every day. He was always smiling and joking. His two sisters adored him. Even though he was their little brother he was the one who looked after them. He was a fine cook and baker and cooked Christmas dinner for all of us each year.

"He had a lot of friends – more than we ever knew and it has been lovely to hear all their stories about him this last nine weeks – we have learnt a lot.

"The memory of our last weekend together will be one to cherish, we were all home together on the Friday to enjoy a takeaway, doing everyday jobs on the Saturday. He went out to watch the rugby on the Saturday night with a group of friends. After Sunday lunch together, he was teasing his sister who has a house on a red flood warning alert. He was teasing her because of the storms that we were having that weekend. He took her to check on the house and he had supper with his friends nearby.

"His last day was no different to any other, he had purchased a brand new trailer and was laughing and joking as usual. On the Monday evening after supper and usual chit chat he left the lounge and that was the last we saw of him.

"Because of his outgoing personality, his constant teasing and joking and his visible enjoyment of life, we are in complete disbelief that he took his own life. We are absolutely devastated and still cannot believe that this has happened to him.

"Diolch Bryn, Carys, Hawys, Miriam and Ifan."

In all Gruff’s family and friends have donated £5,076.50 to the DPJ Foundation in his memory. The charity has promised to ensure that it uses every penny to support people in Welsh farming communities.

Emma Picton-Jones, moved by the family's gesture, said: "If you take anything away from this let it be that this can happen to anyone. If you are worried about someone or feel concerned that someone may be at risk, take action.

"Talk to them and get them to talk to us."
