The final guests tosit opposite the talk show host in recent weeks include Oprah, Mila Kunis, Kerry Washington, John Legend, and Chrissy Teigan.
While The Ellen Show will continue to air throughout the summer, DeGeneres will be replaced by guest hosts.
The Ellen Show has been sharing memories from the past 19 seasons on Twitter--and here, we’ve rounded up some of the show’s most memorable moments.
Why is the Ellen Show ending?
In her Netflix special, Relatable, which aired in 2018, DeGeneres suggested that the show might come to an end soon. The comedian said that although the show had “been great,” it was “so comfortable” for her, and that she wanted to stay creative.
In 2020, Buzzfeed News published allegations from former employees that accused The Ellen Show of having a toxic work environment. Ellen later apologised, but the show dipped in ratings, lost advertisers, and struggled to book guests, according to Buzzfeed.
DeGeneres revealed in May 2021 that the show would be ending, but also said that in 2019 she had signed a deal for three more years, so knew then that season 19 would be the last–regardless of the allegations.
The Ellen Show’s most notable moments
Nineteen seasons of the talk show have produced a number of memorable moments, from Sophia Grace and Rosie’s rendition of Super Bass to Dakota Johnson’s famous clapback.
Dakota Johnson calls Ellen out
When DeGeneres interviewed Fifty Shades of Grey star Dakota Johnson in 2019, the talk show host tried to call the actress out for not inviting her to her birthday party.
But Johnson–famously–hit back and said: "Actually no, that’s not the truth, Ellen.”
Johnson told DeGeneres that she was invited, but that she chose not to go. The actress insisted that she was right and told Ellen to “Ask everybody, ask Jonathan, your producer.”
DeGeneres was forced to sheepishly say: “I think I do remember I was invited. I really didn’t remember that until just now.”
The clip has been viewed more than 8 million times on YouTube.
Sophia Grace and Rosie perform Super Bass
English cousins Sophia Grace and Rosie, (then aged 8 and 5, respectively) appeared on the Ellen Show in 2011, after a video of them performing Super Bass went viral. The video of them performing on Ellen has since amassed 39 million views.
The youngsters went on to have their own segment on the show–Tea Time with Sophia Grace and Rosie–where they interviewed celebrities like Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and Justin Bieber.
They even appeared on the show to perform Super Bass with Nicki Minaj herself–with the video taking the top spot with the most views of any video on the Ellen Show’s YouTube channel.
In May 2022, the cousins returned to the show to perform Super Bass, 11 years after their initial appearance.
Ellen and Michelle Obama visit CVS
In 2016, to “help prepare the First Lady for life after the White House,” DeGeneres and Michelle Obama went shopping at US pharmacy chain CVS.
The talk show host wreaked havoc in the shop–including pouring fellow customers wine from a box right off the shelf.
Obama told her “you’re not a good person to shop with,” and said “it’s like taking a three-year-old to the store.”
The video of their antics has amassed 63 million views on YouTube.
