Mortons Rolls issue redundancy notices as workers told 'regard your service as terminated'

Mortons Rolls have reportedly started issuing redundancy notices to staff after the Drumchapel bakers ceased trading earlier this month.

Glasgow was hit with the hammer-blow on March 4 when the popular bakery's demise was announced. There was an outpour of disappointment from Glaswegians who knew and loved Mortons Rolls.

The closure came after 58 years of operating with some 250 people at risk of losing their jobs.

Redundancy notices have already been issued but it's not yet known how many staff have been affected, STV news reports.

It comes after a provisional liquidator was appointed to the bakery on Friday.

An email sent to employees read: “I regret to advise you that the company is no longer in a position to make payments for services rendered by you under its contract of employment with you.

“You should therefore regard your service as terminated, as from March 7 2023. A formal letter has been issued to your home address containing further details.

“The Provisional Liquidator is working alongside Skills Development Scotland and the Partnership Action for Continuing Employment (“PACE”). This is the Scottish Government’s initiative dedicated to helping individuals with the advice and support they need when faced with redundancy. Further information is contained with the letter.”

Mortons Rolls began selling their popular morning rolls when they first started in 1965, before branching out into baked goods. Over the years, they've become somewhat of an icon here in Glasgow.

Last week, there was a glimmer of hope for the business with Labour MSP Paul Sweeney announcing he was in talks with investors wanting to buy Mortons Rolls and save the brand.
