Morrisons turns down checkout beeps for 'weird' reason after Queen's death

Shoppers in Morrisons have been left baffled after being unable to hear their items scanning - because the sound has been turned down after stores switched off music and tannoy announcements as a mark of respect to the Queen.

One shopper took to Reddit to tell of his experience in-store, where he noticed shoppers seemed to be struggling at self-service machines more than usual. When it got to his turn, he said he couldn't hear the beep, and was told by a member of staff that they had been changed due to the period of national mourning.

"I still don't think I understand...," the shopper wrote in their now-viral post.

The supermarket told the Manchester Evening News that checkouts are still beeping, but their volume has been reduced as tannoy announcements and music in stores has been switched off to mark the passing of the monarch.

A number of shops and attractions around the UK have announced measures to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away last Thursday. Shops including Primark, Aldi, and John Lewis will close all their stores on Monday in recognition of the Queen's funeral.
