Morrisons has launched a "tasty" new cake in honour of the Queen as the Platinum Jubilee celebrations draw nearer.
The Queen became the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee this year, with a celebratory bank holiday weekend taking place in June to mark the occasion. Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne 70 years ago on February 6, 1952.
Many shops and supermarkets are releasing special edition products in honour of the special anniversary, with Morrisons set to delight customers with its Elizabeth Sponge cake. The new cake follows the recipe of a Victoria Sponge - an iconic British favourite.

The classic sweet treat is also a royal favourite, with the Duchess of Cornwall recently sharing her preferred recipe for making the cake with toppings such as jam and cream spread on sponges and topped with berries. The Elizabeth Sponge from Morrisons shares the royal recipe, with every cake being freshly prepared by hand in store at the Market Street Cake Shop.
Each cake is made up of three layers of classic sponge sandwiched between strawberry jam and whipped cream, before a Morrisons Cake Maker completes the top with an arrangement of fresh strawberries and a dusting of icing sugar. The Elizabeth Sponge costs £4 and serves six people. It can be enjoyed at any tea party with the Queen’s favourite tea – an Earl Grey.
Jessica Islip, Cake Shop manager at Morrisons, said: “The Platinum Jubilee is a cause for nationwide celebration and we want to help our customers enjoy the festivities by offering a cake fit for a King or Queen. Victoria Sponges are one of our customers’ favourite cakes and we hope the change in name brings a bit of fun to their long weekend as well as a tasty treat.”
The Elizabeth Sponge is available from Monday, May 30 in 334 Morrisons Cake Shops nationwide.
