Morrisons slammed by shoppers for £4.49 pasta sauce that costs £2.09 in B&M

Shoppers have taken aim at Morrisons after spotting a jar of pasta sauce cost £2.40 more than the exact same one being sold in bargain retailer B&M. Taking to popular Facebook group, Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK, Morrisons customer, Kirsty Hartley, vented her frustrations to fellow users, claiming the store is "ripping us off".

She wrote: "I love this sauce but the large jar has gone up to £4.49 in Morrisons, then I found the exact same jar for £2.09 in B&M it just goes to show how much the supermarkets are ripping us off!!!" She also shared an image of the sauce - Loyd Grossman's Tomato and Chilli - on a shelf in an unspecified Morrisons branch with the price tag stating '£4.49', next to one from B&M with a £2.09 label.

She went on to add: "Yes it is cheaper to make your own sauce but due to work being done on my house I haven’t had a kitchen since Aug. I should have one fitted by Feb so these sauces have been handy and not everyone likes cooking so hopefully this post helps others xx."

On the Morrisons website, it is selling 660g jars of Loyd Grossman Tomato and Chilli sauce for £4.49 - which is 69p per 100g. Elsewhere, Sainsbury's and Tesco is selling it for £3 - 45p per 100g - and at Asda, it is going for £4 (60.6p per 100g).

Since sharing her annoyance on Wednesday (Jan 18), her post has racked up more than 2.8k likes, with hundreds of people leaving comments. Many people did not hold back and were also just as angry at the price difference.

Matthew Humphrys declared: "Omg I'd never spend over £4 for that!!!!" Katie Winnell fumed: "Morrisons!!!! Shockingly expensive." Sue Lloyd added: "Morrisons is expensive but that's ridiculous. I'd never play that for a jar."

Helen Swithenbank stated: "That is scandalous!" Helen Linford replied: "I’d say it was Morrisons ripping people off. I bet it will be “on special offer” very soon though."

Lindy Wilson echoed: "It's absolutely ridiculous the prices are going up up and up." Linds Daly added: "Morrisons prices have sky rocketed! Aldi all the way for me."

Some others suggested making your own sauce at home would be better financially. Meg Lee put forward: "Make it your self.. soooo much cheaper and 10x better." Hannah Rebecca Salisbury added: "So much easier and nicer to make yourself, plus you can make a big batch to freeze so it's still an easy mealtime. Also I'm sure these used to be £1."

Manchester Evening News has contacted Morrisons for comment.
