Morrisons own-label £9 wine crowned best supermarket cava at prestigious awards

For the wine lovers among us, picking up a good quality bottle of wine that won't break the bank can sometimes feel like an impossible mission.

But with the cost of living crisis continuing to bite hard at our bank accounts, purchasing a bottle of pocket-friendly wine is better than paying for the more expensive options.

This is why it will come as good news to wine connoisseurs that an own-label bottle of fizz from Morrisons has been crowned the best fizz sold by a supermarket.

In even better news, the award-winning wine costs less than a tenner a bottle.

The supermarket's The Best Marques de los Ríos Cava Brut was crowned the nation's best cava at the 2022 Olive Supermarket Awards, which aim to celebrate the best retailer exclusive and supermarket label wines.

Priced at just £9 for a 75cl bottle, the fizz also proved to be the most affordable as it managed to beat out other supermarket wines that were priced at £20 and above.

The winning bottle of bubbly, which is made in Spain, was the favourite amongst the judging panel for its "rich nose, creamy bubbles, and zesty finish".

Fans who want to give the wine a try are advised to give it a bit of a spicy twist by serving it up with some Mexican nachos to really bring out the flavour.

And the supermarket didn't just take home the prize for the best bottle of cava, as Morrisons Chevaliers Saint-Martin Bordeaux (£4.99) also took first place in the best budget red category, while their The Best Pedro Ximénez secured the top prize in the PX sherry class.

Mark Jarman, Head of Wine Sourcing at Morrisons, said, “The results from this year’s Olive Supermarket Wine Awards underline what it is that we aim to offer customers; great quality wines, at affordable prices.

"We’re really delighted that The Best Marques de los Ríos Cava Brut – with a price tag under £10 – has had this recognition, and we hope that our full range will allow customers to stock up on their favourite tipples for summer without breaking the bank.”

Morrisons also placed runner-up in five more categories:

  • Best wine to have as an aperitif - Morrisons The Best Crémant de Limoux Rosé (£12)
  • Best vegan wine - Morrisons The Best Primitivo (£8)
  • Best red under £7 to serve chilled - Morrisons Pinot Noir (£4.69)
  • Best orange wine - Rigal Vin Orange (£10)
  • Best sherry for a sherry gin and tonic - Morrisons Fino Sherry (£5.25)

Morrisons The Best Marques de los Ríos Cava Brut (£9) is available in-store and online now.
