Morrisons offers explanation after 9p fuel price rise in just three days

Morrisons has offered an explanation for a steep rise in petrol prices.

Drivers were furious after the St Helens store on Baxter's Lane raised its petrol prices twice in just three days. The prices were reported as 171.9p per litre on Friday, June 10.

This rose to 175.9p over the weekend before peaking at 180.9p by Monday, June 13. A rise of almost 10p in just three days, despite the government's fuel duty cut aiming to lower prices for petrol and diesel.

The price hike caused anger among customers, with one driver saying: "That's a nine pence increase in a matter of days. Is this the 5p fuel duty we are all supposed to be benefitting from?"

The ECHO contacted Morrisons for an explanation on the increase. A spokesperson for Morrisons said: "UK fuel prices can differ from town to town and even from neighbourhood to neighbourhood. We only put prices up if we have to and despite the current volatile and increasing wholesale cost of fuel we aim to be the cheapest in each area we operate."
