Morrisons investigating incident after driver charged more for fuel than price advertised on sign

A Morrisons supermarket has charged a driver more for fuel than what was advertised on the signs outside. The supermarket chain has promised to investigate the incident which occurred in Hinckley, Leicestershire on Wednesday March 9.

David Lord was shocked to find he had been charged 2p more a litre than what was advertised on the totem pole sign at the entrance to the Clover Field Morrisons store in Hinckley. He paid £68.60 for 43.5 litres of diesel, charged at £1.577 per litre instead of £1.537.

He claims to have questioned the cashier about the price difference, but the worker said they had not had time to update the sign. Leicestershire Live contacted Morrisons over the mistake and the supermarket issued a statement.

A spokesperson said: "Our prices fluctuate daily, there is no scheduled pattern, but the pole signs in most instances automatically update to the same price as the pumps. At some locations this automatic update isn't possible due to the distance from the pole sign to the kiosk or interference from buildings/trees as it is transmitted by radio signal.

"The store teams are aware of their obligation to update the pole sign by the appropriate means for their store."

They also said that the issue had been raised with the store manager to be investigated further.

The spokesperson added: "This is not a common occurrence, and steps have been taken to make sure this does not happen again."

Mr Lord took to Facebook minutes after the incident, to post pictures of his receipt and the sign. He warned others: “Be careful don’t be fooled by the prices they’re advertising as they charge you more at the till.”

Mr Lord gets through a tank of diesel every couple of days as he transports children to and from school, and he spends some £200 and rising a week on fuel.
