Morelos post-Rangers nightmare as striker could have played last game for Santos

He only joined Santos last month but Alfredo Morelos could already be planning his next transfer move after a nightmare development which could mean he has already played his last game for the club.

The former Rangers striker signed a two-year deal with the Brazilian giants in September but included was a release clause should the club be relegated.

Santos currently sit in 17th in the Brazilian Serie A - one of four relegation spots - but the club has won its last three matches.

The most recent was a 2-1 win over Palmeiras with Morelos handed his first start in the fixture.

However, since then Morelos has picked up an injury with concerns over a calf issue. The striker will miss the matches against Red Bull Bragantino tomorrow with fears over a long-term layoff.

In fact, Morelos could be kept out of action for over a month, and with just 12 games left he could miss the rest of the season.

If that is the case then it throws up the possible scenario where Morelos could leave Santos due to a relegation release clause in his contract if the club are relegated.

That would mean he would have played his final game for the club - and his only start - in the win over Palmeiras.

The striker could choose not to leave the club, however, even if the side is relegated but a free transfer move would be an option.

Santos have never been relegated from the Brazilian top flight in their history. While they currently sit in the drop zone, just six points split clubs from 10th to 18th in the hotly contested league table.
