More than 100 Irish families have offered to house Ukrainians through Irish Red Cross

More than 100 Irish homes have already opened their arms to welcome Ukrainian war refugees into their families.

The céad míle fáilte comes as the numbers fleeing from Ukraine in the face of murderous attacks from Vladimir Putin’s Russian army multiply.

The United Nations has estimated that over one million people have escaped from the war torn country into countries in western Europe already.

The Irish Red Cross is offering people the opportunity to donate cash on its website, but there is also a button to ‘pledge accommodation’ and over 100 offers have been received.

The same system was used in the past to house Syrian refugees escaping the tyrannical regime of Bashar al-Assad.

The Red Cross said: “Your spare room or vacant property could change a life.

“Pledge today.

“The Red Cross was founded on the idea that help should always be available to people in their time of need.

“We are seeking spare rooms and vacant property pledges so that we can help people arriving in Ireland integrate in our communities.

“When matching pledges, we always consider the best interests of hosts and their communities, and the best interests of the people we are serving.

“If we find a successful match, the Irish Red Cross Migration Team will be on hand to support all parties at every step.

“Could you put your empty space to better use?”
