More police officers will be on streets of London for England's Euro 2024 final against Spain

The Metropolitan Police is set to put more officers on duty in London for England’s Euro 2024 final against Spain on Sunday.

Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has said that there could also be additional bobbies on patrol for a potential ceremony through the capital, should the Three Lions win the trophy.

Asked if he was confident that Scotland Yard would be able to keep the streets safe, Sir Mark told ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Friday: “Absolutely so.

“Fast-moving events like this, like with some of the protests that get announced last minute, we are changing lots of officers’ duties.

“We will have more officers on duty on Sunday night.

“As that and maybe the players returning home happens, we are changing duties and getting more officers out there and people will be safe.”

England are playing Spain at 8pm on Sunday night and a potential victory ceremony or open top bus tour would likely be held early in the week following.

Sir Keir Starmer has not granted a bank holiday but has said a celebration would be in order if Gareth Southgate’s side win their first major tournament since 1966.

Sir Mark added: “We all want to enjoy it and we will have our fingers crossed.”

He has not said exactly how many extra officers will be on duty on Sunday.

Hundreds of extra officers have been put on duty throughout the tournament, including last Saturday when a pro-Palestine march was also held through the capital.
