NAKHON PHANOM: A large quantity of compressed marijuana was seized from the bank of the Mekong River in Ban Phaeng district by a patrol of the Mekong Riverine Unit (MRU) late on Monday night.

Eighteen large bags and six motorcycle sidecars were spotted by the patrol on the river bank near Ban Don Phaeng in tambon Ban Phaeng.

The bags were filled with one-kilogramme bars of compressed marijuana, weighing about 900-1,000kgs in total.

The drug was believed to have been smuggled across the river from Laos and left on the river bank for further distribution by drug couriers.

Since early this year, about 10 tonnes of smuggled marijuana had been seized in this northeastern border province, according to the MRU.
