More emergency alert chaos after alarm goes off in middle of night

The Government’s emergency phone alert system has again come under criticism after going off in the middle of the night, hours after it was supposed to, for some users.

The alarm test was supposed to go off at 3pm on Sunday, on all devices that were using 4G and 5G networks in the UK.

But Danny Wisniewski, from Slough, told The Sun he was woken by receiving the alert for a second time at 2.22am on Monday.

He said: “It scared the life out of myself and my wife as we were fast asleep and wondered what was going on.

“It was the same alert I had on Sunday.”

John Day claimed on Twitter he got the alarm the next morning startling him whilst driving. He said: “Nothing at 3pm.

“However today whilst on motorway alert went off at 9.15am (startled me whilst driving) and another alert at 9.30am. Comments from the instigators please.”

Plumber Mark Peters, 54, of Derby, told The Sun he got the alert at 8am.

He said: “It doesn’t bode well if this is supposed to be keeping us safe and alert.”

A poll conducted by money saving expert Martin Lewis found that 26 per cent of his followers received the alert but not at the scheduled 3pm, while 21 per cent didn’t get it at all.

A review will be conducted to find out why some mobile phones did not receive the test.

The Cabinet Office said the “vast majority of compatible phones” received the alert as part of what was said to be the biggest public communications exercise carried out in the UK.

Customers on the Three mobile phone network were among those to report not receiving the test.
