Canyon has announced they are releasing a brand new Canyon Lux Trail. The Lux Trail still shares some DNA with the Lux World Cup but has been completely redesigned into what Canyon describes as an Ultra-capable XC bike.
Canyon's range has always had room for a marathon / downcountry bike to nestle between their World Cup-winning cross-country bikes and longer travel trail bikes. A couple of years ago the first Canyon Lux Trail was released, which took a slacker longer front end and bolted it to a Lux rear end. The bike couldn't shake its classic XC roots though and as a result, it couldn't compete with the fun but fast downcountry bikes.
Canyon appears to continue to lean into the performance side of downcountry, aiming the Lux Trail at the marathon/FKT (Fastest Known Time) market. The good news is it looks as though they took Guy Kesteven's criticisms (from his Canyon Lux Trail review) on board, as the new version addresses many of the sticking points that he found held it back from being a proper rowdy downcountry bike.
Starting with the numbers, the geometry has received an overhaul. The seat tube has been steepened to 76 degrees and the head tube has been slackened a touch to 67 degrees. Travel has also been tweaked, keeping the 120mm up front but adding an extra 5mm to the rear to give it 115mm of travel.
The suspension system itself has been updated as well, it still has the rough layout of the Lux World Cup but Canyon has added a hanging rocker to give the bike better small bump sensitivity. The shock has three modes, that are actuated by a grip shift, giving the riders the option of Open, Pedal, or Locked mode. The shocks are also tuned based on the frame size (XS to M and for L and XL) which should give a more consistent feel for all riders.
The Lux Trail will only be available in carbon frames and come in either CF or the premium CFR levels. Canyon quotes the CF frame weight at 2,164g while the CFR is 1,996g.
Canyon has sweated over the details too. Every frame size has space for two water bottles and all bikes come with size-specific dropper post travel and cockpit dimensions.
Canyon has added plenty of neat storage for accessories. For quick access, there is a mini-tool under the top tube, a CO2 canister attached to the inside of the downtube storage cover, and tire plugs in the bar ends. For bigger repairs, there's downtube space for the Canyon Load Pouch (€19.95) where you can keep tubes, levers, more CO2, and any other spares that you might need along the way.
The tools are sold separately so you can build your own repair kit, or you can buy a complete Lux Trail Tool Bundle for €112.14.
Availability, pricing and specification
The Lux Trail is available in six models. Two CFR models: Lux Trail CFR LTD and Lux Trail CFR. And four CF models: Lux Trail CF 9, 8, 7, and 6. The new Lux Trail is available now on Canyon.com. Some bad news if you're in the US and fancy the premium CFR frame, as the CFR models and the CF 6 model are not available in the US.
