PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: Sixteen illegal migrants from Myanmar seeking jobs in Thailand were arrested after crossing into Muang district on Saturday.

A joint patrol of soldiers and police spotted a group of men and women walking along a trail from the border in tambon Huai Sai. A total of 16 were caught, Col Pongpat Hongsinlak, deputy commander of the Chong Ang Suek task force, said on Saturday.

During questioning, they said they had travelled from Mawlamyine and Rakhine townships to get jobs in Thailand. They said they had paid between 20,000 and 25,000 baht each to brokers for jobs in Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakan, Surat Thani and Samut Sakhon.

All were taken to the Khlong Wan police station for legal proceedings prior to deportation.
