Montoya, por favor! Here's why Spanish Temptation Island is breaking the internet

If you’ve woken up and scrolled on literally any social media site this morning, you’ll have been confronted with an impassioned Spanish man screaming and yanking on his swim shorts as he watches his girlfriend cheat on him via a live feed. Meanwhile a television host begs him “Montoya, por favor!” before he runs the entire length of a beach to confront her.

This is what life is like on La Isla de las Tentaciones (aka Temptation Island), the Spanish reality TV show that’s earning comparisons to Love Island when it was still good. Or, more aptly, Love Island if it was still good and it was Casa Amor the entire time.

For some context, La Isla de las Tentaciones is a Spanish reality TV show that has been running for seven seasons. Just as Love Island is mainly filled with British people and set in Mallorca, the Spanish Temptation Island is full of largely Spanish people and filmed on the sunny, sexy shores of the Dominican Republic.

It follows a cohort of couples who agree to test their relationships by entering separate villas where they will be confronted with “temptation” i.e stupidly hot people designed to make them cheat. Ergo, Casa Amor.

Here’s the twist: Unlike Casa Amor, which largely stays a secret unless it’s reported back to the Islanders via “movie night” at a later date, moments from the villas on La Isla de las Tentaciones get reported live.

This creates some pretty insane situations. Most recently, contestant José Carlos Montoya had to watch on as his girlfriend, Anita Williams, cheated on him on live television by having sex with another contestant in Villa Playa (one of the two villas on the island).

José Carlos Montoya, known as Montoya, is watching on from the other villa as the cheating happens in real time. He is stood in front of a comically large TV screen as Anita gets into bed with another man and starts having very (for UK reality TV standards at least) graphic sex with the male contestant.

Montoya can’t take it anymore, so he runs the entire length of the beach between villas to confront his girlfriend and scream at the moon. This is a breach of the rules, so the interviewer pleads with him “Montoya por favor, Montoya, por favor!” to no avail. Montoya is gone.

Another viral clip from the show saw Montoya watch on via iPad as Anita is making out with a male contestant in the pool. Montoya kicks the iPad and tears off his shirt, leading many to believe this is why he is being forced to watch the Villa Playa clips on a larger, non-kickable screen from now on.

Anita’s behaviour is a direct response to Montoya also “cheating” on her via a lap dance he received from another female contestant in a previous episode. Many have questioned whether Anita’s response is somewhat out of proportion.

The series is ongoing. Both clips’ online virality has led to a huge increase in interest in the show, which is sadly not available to stream in the UK. But maybe this sudden swarm of interest could change things... por favor?
