The Washington Commanders traded defensive end Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline. In return, the Commanders received a 2024 second-round draft pick, which could be a top-35 pick if Chicago’s season continues to trend in its current direction.
Washington wanted to retain Sweat, often mentioning how it would like to sign him to a multi-year contract extension. But there was no guarantee Sweat would sign a long-term contract with the Commanders, so Washington wisely moved him for an important asset in the 2024 NFL draft.
Sweat finishes his Washington career by appearing in 67 games (all starts), recording 197 tackles, including 47 for loss, 36.5 sacks and 85 QB hits.
On Friday, the No. 26 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft out of Mississippi State took to Instagram to post a heartfelt message to the Commanders, including his coaches and all of his former teammates, and the fans.
A classy gesture from Sweat.
