Montenegro's iconic beach deal with UAE firm sparks public outcry

Citizens and activists protest a proposed beach lease agreement with UAE's Eagle Hills, fearing it undermines national sovereignty and environmental protections.

Critics argue the deal bypasses local laws and privileges foreign investors. President Milatović supports the protests, emphasising that investments must respect Montenegro's legal framework and community needs.

Stretching 12 kilometres along Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, Velika Plaža (Long Beach) is not only the longest beach in Montenegro, but also one of the longest in all of Europe. Its unspoilt sands and windswept beauty earned it global recognition when The New York Times featured it in its prestigious “Top Places to Go in 2010” list, alongside the nearby Ada Bojana island and the iconic Hotel Mediteran.
