Energy saving tip uses free heat for washing up without turning on hot tap

A handy way to save money while doing the washing up has been shared on social media - and you won't even have to reach for the hot water tap.

A few days from now it'll be Christmas, meaning the dirty dishes will no doubt be piling up. With the current cost of living crisis, piling them all in the dishwasher or even just running enough hot water to clean them could end up being very expensive.

But one TikToker has shared how he does his washing up using a trick that uses leftover heat from the oven, which could be helpful when households have finished cooking this festive weekend.

Posting under the username @Costoflivingcrisistips, the social media user often creates videos which help people to save money on their bills and reduce waste within their homes.

One of his recent clips has grabbed the attention of people eager to cut down on their spends this Christmas, as it involves re-using energy created while cooking.

In the video, captions across the screen read: "Save money on washing dishes. After using the oven, fill a container up with water and put it in the oven."

He shows a clip of himself using the cold tap to fill up an oven dish with water, placing it in the oven which has been turned off after cooking.

The text on screen explains: "After a few minutes, it'll be hot enough to wash the dishes with."

The TikToker then pours the hot water from the container into a washing-up bowl, ready to tackle the pile of dirty cups and plates.

In the comments, people praised the man for sharing the hack - but some were despairing that he'd even had to come up with it at all.

One person said: "That's brilliant", while another added: "Cool idea."

A third commented: "I put a pot of water on the stove after using it, never though to do it with the oven tho so thanks for the idea."

"I like this idea! I might put some water in a Pyrex jug and use it for hot water bottles," another suggested.

Appreciative of the hack but in disbelief that the cost of living crisis is hitting this hard, someone else said: "Love this but so sad this tips even have to exist."
