Money Saving Expert's advice on how to pay less than £5 a month for your mobile phone

A top money-saving website has revealed how you could make major savings on your phone bill. Money Saving Expert has revealed how you could drastically cut your phone bills by paying less than £5 per month depending on your circumstances.

In its latest advice on its website, Money Saving Expert estimates that around nine million people are out of contract on mobile phones with some overpaying on their bills by hundreds per year.

If you're out of contract, there are a number of attractive options available that would mean spending less than £5 per month on your bill. It's likely to make a big difference to those hardest hit by the cost of living crisis which has seen inflation soar to a 40-year-high. You can read more about why prices are going up here.

If you're out of contract and don't use too much data, SMARTY, a SIM-only mobile network, is offering 4GB of data and unlimited calls and texts for just £4 per month. It's a monthly rolling contract but you can cancel any time and can keep your same number.

With Lycamobile, you can get 12GB per month for around £4.20 a month. It's £1.49 a month for six months, then £6.90 a month after that, which averages at £4.20 a month over a year. It's a monthly contract, and you can cancel any time. One thing worth noting though is that Lycamobile doesn't offer 5G data speeds on iPhones or wi-fi and 4G calling on all phones.

Those who use lots of data are also being warned to check if they're paying more than £12 a month. Three is offering 100GB a month for £10.84 per month. It's £15 per month but gives £50 automatic cashback within three months, meaning it is equivalent to £10.84 month over a year's contract.

When compared to some other networks - for example, Giffgaff offers just 1GB for £6 a month, or 3GB for £8 per month - the offers present a good saving that might be worth considering if you're struggling to pay your bills. While some people are loyal to their existing network and don't want the hassle of swapping SIM cards, with costs being so high right now it is worth taking into account, even if it means only saving a few extra pounds each month.
