Money Saving Expert issues passport 'hack' to make applying for a new one cheaper

Thousands of people will be thinking about stepping foot into an airport soon with a surge in bookings noted across the sector as travel restrictions ease.

However, whilst holidays are on the cards for many this Easter, it's proving more difficult for some after reports of passport issues across the UK.

The Gov.uk website states it costs around £80 to renew or replace a passport online with an expected five to 10 week period to receive a passport after submitting an application.

However whilst many have said the wait is much longer - and urging people to do it much sooner than 10 weeks - a fresh appeal has been launched by Money Saving Expert (MSE) who have said customers can save almost a tenner when renewing their passport - a trick which almost a million people seem to be unaware of.

According to the financial site, the cheapest way to get update passport - whether you're getting your first passport, renewing an old one, changing your name or personal details, or getting a passport for your child - is to simply apply online.

At present it costs £75.50 to get a new first-time or replacement adult passport online, including if you need to change the details on it and for child passports it's £49.

However in comparison MSE have said that applying by post and using a paper form costs is more expensive increasing the cost to £85 and £58.50, respectively.

This is an increase of £9.50 in both cases and if you take an average family of four, you could be saving £38.

The warning to allow more time when applying for a passport as well as to apply online, come as the money saving experts reveal figures released by the Passport Office under the Freedom of Information Act show 674,454 applications were made by post.

MSE concluded: "According to the Post Office, standard passport applications are two and a half times more likely to be delayed due to basic errors than applications processed via Check & Send, so if you think you might make a mistake or are in a hurry it may be worth opting for the service.

"But while Check & Send costs £16 on top of the standard passport fee, you'll again save by using the digital Check & Send service as opposed to the paper version. For example, renewing an adult passport using digital Check & Send costs £91.50 while doing the same renewal using paper Check & Send costs £101 (£9.50 more) .

"If you opt for the digital Check & Send service, the Post Office will complete the online application form and take your digital photo for you, so you can save even if you aren't able or don't want to do this yourself."
