Huge mountain of rubbish builds outside Scots dump as bin strikes continue across country
A mountain of rubbish has been piled up on the pavement outside a Scots recycling centre as bin strikes across the country continue. Shocking pictures taken outside Dawsholm Recycling Centre in Glasgow shows discarded household furniture including sofas and microwaves being left along the fence.
Piles of bin bags and cardboard boxes have covered the pavement with mattresses and washing machines completely blocking the gates of the dump. The pile continues to grow as members of the public arrived throughout the day on Monday to discard their unwanted goods.
Signs demanding better pay have been attached to the fence of the centre as GMB Scotland members stand at the official picket line. Similar scenes have occurred on the pavement of Easter Queenslie Road while the recycling centre is shut.
Formal strike action has now spread across 16 council areas with waste and recycling staff also joining in from August 26.
Scots mum living in tower block 'off-grid' due to crippling fuel bills as she uses candles to light home
A woman has chosen to live in her tower block home “off-grid” because of crippling fuel bills.
Carol Chambers, 47, is thought to be among thousands of people already without electricity as energy costs soar. She was cut off by her supplier and has opted to use solar power, candles and blankets to get through the winter.
Carol has spent around £200 on a “survival pack”, including power banks, solar panels and solar lamps and a camping stove. She plans to brave the cold Scottish winter and has no intention of trying to get her supply reinstated.
Carol said: “I’m doing this partly as a protest but I can’t afford to turn my heaters on in any case. It will cost a tenner a day for my storage heaters to be on and that would swallow up the vast majority of my monthly cash.
“All the other stuff, like my iPhone, iPad, lighting and cooking I can get from sunlight and gas canisters.”
Ex-Hearts footballer threatened to kill cheating wife and married senior cop after car park romp
Former Hearts and Livingston star Lee Makel has admitted sending messages threatening to kill his estranged wife and the senior police officer she was having an affair with.
The 49-year-old ex footballer - who used to play for Blackburn Rovers, Hearts and Livingston - pleaded guilty at Jedburgh Sheriff Court to threatening and abusive behaviour towards his ex-partner Claire Makel and former Police Scotland chief superintendent Gareth Blair.
He admitted repeatedly sending messages to Claire that were abusive and threatening including threatening to kill her and Mr Blair and did further send abusive messages about him.
The offence happened at his former home in Lauder, Berwickshire, and elsewhere between June and September 2019.
Defence lawyer Jennifer Cameron said the offence happened at the time when there had been "significant publicity" about his wife and Mr Blair "participating in public indecency at the Hermiston Gate park and ride car park"
NHS doctor bravely opens up on battle to accept own son's life-limiting condition
The mum of a Scots teen with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) says she cannot talk about her son's deteriorating condition 'without fear or emotion' as it has left him unable to 'eat, drink or scratch his nose' unaided.
Tomek Ciechomski, of Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, was diagnosed with DMD - a severe, progressive, muscle-wasting disease that leads to difficulties with movement and premature death - when he was two years old.
Although the 15-year-old managed to get through most of his childhood with decent mobility, two years ago, he lost the ability to walk, and was left wheelchair-bound.
The schoolboy is now rapidly losing power in his upper body, meaning he is unable to carry out simple tasks 'that others take for granted' such as raising his arms, scratching his head and brushing his teeth.
Motor torched by bungling firebomb thug who set himself alight before fleeing scene on Scots street
Police have launched an investigation after a BMW was firebombed by a thug who set himself on fire as he tried to escape the scene.
The white saloon was set alight in the early hours of Sunday August 28, "terrifying" neighbours and prompting a huge emergency response. The blaze was so fierce that it melted the driveway as well as both cladding and pipework on the outside of the house in Dundee's Finella Terrace.
A recovery truck was seen removing the vehicle from the scene on Monday afternoon. CID officers were also spotted at the property as the investigation continues, although no motive has been established for the attack.
Pictures from the scene show the melted remains of the motor, which was left a charred shell of a vehicle.
Locals say that a man was seen running from the scene after hurling what is believed to be a small can of petrol at the car as it sat in the driveway. Several eyewitnesses told the Record that he had set his jacket on fire in the process, and may have discarded it as he jumped into a waiting car and sped off.
