Monastery demolition plan to clear land to build homes

Plans have been submitted to demolish a North Wales monastery to clear the way to build homes.

Nuns had lived at Poor Clare Colettine Monastery on Upper Aston Hall Lane, Hawarden, Flintshire, for 90 years - but left the site last summer.

Now after a consultation with the community, plans have been submitted by Eccleston Homes to pull down the existing buildings - which were redeveloped in the 1960s.

These would be replaced with 15 new homes.

A report by Cass Associates on behalf of Eccleston Homes states: "The specific design, function and layout of the complex of buildings makes conversion to other viable uses impractical and is not viable.

"The complex of buildings is not protected and are not of particular architectural significance.

"Notwithstanding this, there are features on the site which are of interest as they provide a faint link to the original Aston Bank building and its immediate grounds."

The site lies in 'Green Barrier' land in the local plan but the developer says there are exceptional circumstances in this case.

The Cass Associates report said: "The re-development of Poor Clare’s Monastery is based on an approach which concentrates housing on land which has been used previously, which ensures that the containment provided by trees, woodlands and boundaries is maintained and which results in an overall reduction of built footprint and a lesser mass of buildings.

"These all serve to protect the open character and appearance of the green barrier."

A decision will be made by planners at Flintshire council.

The Poor Clare community of nuns has relocated to a parish in Nottingham.

They moved out in November and disinterred the 18 sisters in the cemetery for reburial in Nottingham.
