It has been revealed that Russia and Monaco midfielder Aleksandr Golovin was ‘ready’ to join Newcastle United after snubbing both Everton and West Ham when the Magpies went on a spending spree in January 2022.
That is according to the midfielder’s agent Alexander Klyuev, who told Championat: “There was serious interest from Newcastle at the very beginning of 2022. There was an offer. We were ready to discuss it if the clubs agreed.
“We understood that Newcastle, given the arrival of serious investors, is an interesting prospect. At different times, West Ham and Everton were testing the ground, but he wanted to join a club that plays in European competitions."

Since the initial discussions 15 months ago, the Magpies have seemingly turned their attention to other attacking midfielders – namely James Maddison. But with Leicester continuing to drive a hard bargain – Golovin could be a smart and cheaper option.
This may frustrate some Toon fans due to the fact their owners’ pockets are so deep but the Russian international is not to be sniffed at as his 15 goal contributions this season suggest he could make a real difference on Tyneside.
Hard-working, physical, and creative on the ball, Golovin’s performances this season have propelled Monaco into Champions League contention – currently pushing for a Champions League spot.
Before his scintillating performances this season however, Golovin was of course best known for his exploits at the Russia World Cup in 2018 – in which he was the star man in a Russia side that reached the quarter finals.
The midfielder also admits he has no regrets over his Monaco move. “Of course, I am happy with my choice. It was not easy to choose at that age with big clubs asking you where you want to go," he said.
"I talked with my parents, my coaches, the coach of the national team and a lot of guys who tried to help me make the best decision. I made the best decision. I can only say thank you for these amazing five years."
