Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell to leave club amid Liverpool links

AS Monaco are reportedly bracing themselves for the departure of sporting director Liverpool-linked Paul Mitchell, according to L'Equipe.

Julian Ward will leave a similar role on Merseyside, at the end of the season, just a year into the post after replacing Michael Edwards. Since taking over, he has brokered deals for Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo and a new deal for Mohamed Salah.

Mitchell has been seemingly in-demand around Europe following his work with the Ligue 1 side, prior to the appointment of Christopher Vivell, the Englishman was set to be pursued by Chelsea following their hierarchical restructure under Todd Boehly.

According to the French outlet, the 41-year-old will turn down an extension at the Louis II Stadium and leave the club at the end of the summer transfer window.

Mitchell’s contract runs until June 2024, but the report states that he informed Monaco in December that he wouldn’t be extending his current deal. He will, however, take charge of the summer transfer window.

The development will see speculation surrounding him and the Liverpool position skyrocket as the Reds have yet to undergo a search to fill the position for the departing Ward, the ECHO understands.

During his time in the sovereign state, he staged huge deals for Aurelien Tchouameni and Benoit Badiashile as they secured moves to Real Madrid and Chelsea respectively for a fee north of £100m. He has worked with Liverpool in the past after negotiations for the French midfielder prior to his move to the Spanish capital.

He was also on the other end of talks as he helped bring Takumi Minamino to Monaco from Liverpool, last July.
