Monaco boss delivers honest verdict on Aurelien Tchouameni future amid Chelsea transfer links

Aurelien Tchouameni has established himself as one of the most promising midfielders in Europe during his two seasons at Monaco. The 22-year-old was voted Ligue 1 player of the year in 2021 and boosted his reputation further by playing a pivotal role in last season's third-place finish.

The Frenchman made 50 appearances across all competitions to help Philippe Clement’s side qualify for the Champions League and his sensational displays have seen him linked with an array of European football’s top clubs. Chelsea, Liverpool and Spanish champions Real Madrid are among those rumoured to be interested in acquiring his services.

Midfield is an area that the Blues boss Thomas Tuchel is believed to be keen on strengthening with Jorginho and N’Golo Kante both in their 30s, and poised to enter the final year of their respective contracts. Tchouameni’s combative nature, ability to make interceptions and close opponents down at pace would make him an almost like-for-like replacement for the latter.

Monaco boss Clement insists that the France midfielder is happy at The Stade Louis II, but conceded that he is likely to leave if he receives an acceptable offer from the right club. He said: “I spoke with Aurelien, of course, as with all my players.

“I know his ideas, they are good. He’s ambitious, but he’ll leave here only if there’s a big opportunity at a big club. It’s normal. He is very happy to be here. We’ll see in the next few weeks.”

Tchouameni's game has rapidly developed since he joined Monaco from Bordeaux two years ago, typified by the fact that made his debut for France’s senior team last August. However, he is expected to leave the Ligue 1 side for a club that’s capable of winning the biggest prizes in the domestic and European game.

The Frenchman only has two years left on his contract which is likely to tempt Monaco to sell in the upcoming transfer window. He is expected to cost somewhere in the region of €70million. (£59.4m)
