Moment when Glasgow driver hits huge pothole captured as passengers left 'shocked'

The moment when a Glasgow driver hit a huge pothole has been captured by dash cam footage.

The video shows the car going into the pothole alongside the reaction of the passengers inside the car when the vehicle dips into the hole in the road.

The crater that appears in the video is located on Renfrew Street in the city centre next to the Theatre Royal. The pothole can be seen from a distance with the the bus in the left hand lane forcing the car to drive through it.

Glasgow University lecturer John Levy was driving the vehicle and caught the moment on camera.

He said: "I was shocked enough from the bang of the front-right corner of the car dropping suddenly, and I had a few fractions of a seconds to clench my stomach.

"My wife and son in the car had to feel it with no warning and were very alarmed at the blow - as they have been very alarmed from other potholes we've hit in the past."

John drives frequently in the city and worries about the 'precarious' condition of roads in Glasgow.

He continued: "The potholes make driving very precarious, with the constant needs to swerve, to slow down suddenly.

"Each time I hit one of these I have to worry if I've suffered another puncture. I've had two punctures already from bad potholes in the past two years since I began driving in Glasgow.

"And it could be worse - a friend who cycles was thrown from his bike."

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “Potholes can appear suddenly at any time and are caused by the impact of traffic on the road surface alongside environmental conditions such as heavy rain or flooding, ice and snow.

“During the winter just past, Glasgow experienced its lowest road surface temperatures in 12 years ,followed by long periods of rainfall, which is a very damaging combination for road surfaces.

“Our responsibility is to ensure we have in place an appropriate system of road safety inspections and repairs that tackles the most dangerous faults as a matter of priority.

“The roads network is inspected on an on-going basis but we always urge people to report any road faults to us directly so they can be properly assessed and included in an appropriate repair programme.

“Our teams work throughout the year to undertake repairs and a range of resurfacing interventions that ensure the road network is safe for use.

“Utility firms are responsible for their service covers and we liaise with these firms to ensure utility covers are properly maintained.

“The fault on Hope Street will be assessed and will be appropriately prioritised for repair.”
