Moment M62 lorry carrying van span out of control after tyre burst

The Channel 5 show 'The Motorway' showed the moment a vehicle lost control and was spread across two live lanes on the M62.

The crash happened near Bradford, by Junction 26. In the Leeds control room, a truck with a trailer was spotted facing the wrong way in the hard shoulder. CCTV footage showed it had suddenly spun out and crashed, blocking two lanes in the process.

This put the truck, with a van on its trailer, in direct danger and so emergency signs along the M62 were activated. It had somehow missed all the nearby vehicles while spinning wildly out of control, meaning a much larger crash had narrowly been avoided.

Sharon and Phil, two patrol officers were rapidly deployed to the scene and the passenger, Michael and driver, Davy, were thankfully unharmed.

It turned out the truck had spun out of control after a tyre had burst. The road had to be closed while the officers were on the scene due to the debris from the crash and the dangerous nature of the situation.

Onboard the trailer, the van which was being transported suffered serious damage along its side, meaning it would likely have to be written off.

The trailer had to be separated from the truck so it could be safely transported, but the jockey wheel linking the truck and trailer together had been jammed. This meant the truck had to be driven with the trailer still attached.

A police escort then helped the truck limp to the next junction before debris was removed from the road and the road was reopened. The whole closure had only lasted 15 minutes.

At the end of the day, no one had been hurt, which Phil described as "very lucky".
