The accompanying tweet read: "Happy 90th birthday to soap legend June Brown. Before the BBC EastEnders Square she graced the Street. Here's a look back to 1971.
Brown made three appearances as Mrs Parsons, whose son Tony received harmonium lessons from long-running character Ena.
She made her EastEnders debut shortly after it began in 1985 and was a mainstay of the Walford-based soap.
It was Leslie Grantham, who played Dirty Den, who suggested the star for the role of Dot, a launderette worker who was always trying to get her career criminal son Nick back on the straight and narrow.
Despite only being given a three-month contract initially, after just six weeks, the character was such a success that Brown was asked to become permanent.
June Brown's family said they were "deeply saddened" to announce that their "beloved mother" had died "very peacefully" at her home on Sunday.
An EastEnders spokesperson said: "There are not enough words to describe how much June was loved and adored by everyone at EastEnders, her loving warmth, wit and great humour will never be forgotten.
"June created one of the most iconic characters in Dot Cotton, not just in soap but in British television, and having appeared in 2884 episodes, June's remarkable performances created some of EastEnders finest moments."
