This is the moment a pane of glass crashes 130ft to the ground after developers failed to fix impact damage from a bird for days in south west London.
A Local MP said it was a “miracle nobody was hurt” by the window as it fell on an area normally busy with shoppers in High Street Colliers Wood on Monday at 3pm.
The bird hit the window of the 18-storey Britannia Point on Thursday but despite the resident’s concerns, it wasn’t fixed until it fell four days later.
Labour MP for Mitcham and Morden, Siobhain McDonagh, has written an open letter demanding developers Criterion Capital give an “urgent response”.
Ms McDonagh wrote: “Miraculously, it is my understanding that nobody was under the glass when it fell and so no one has been hurt. It is indisputable that this is fortuitous and serious harm could have been caused.
“Please can you explain exactly what happened and how this incident occurred? It is imperative that an entire inspection of the building takes place, inside and out.”
Labour Cllr Stuart Neaverson, who tweeted the footage, said: “If it was indeed a bird collision, the fact that Criterion Capital took four days to fix such a serious issue is shocking.”
The building manager apologised to residents and urged them to stop using that entrance.
In a statement to residents, he said: “On Monday a window glass from the 13th floor cracked and fell to the ground. This issue, being caused by a bird impact on the window, was reported last week on Thursday.
“Although the maintenance scheduled to fix it on Monday, due to meteorological conditions, the window cracked before the arrival of the maintenance. Fortunately, no one was harmed.”
He added: “On behalf of Criterion Hospitality, I would like to apologise if the incident gave the tenants a feeling of insecurity and unsafety.”
Merton Council confirmed the authority’s building control team has visited the site to ensure there are no immediate risks.
A spokesperson said: “[The building control team] will carry out a more detailed abseil survey as an immediate priority to check each window, and we have asked for this to be done urgently. Resident safety is paramount and we are monitoring the situation with the owners.”
Criterion Capital have been contacted for comment.
