Video footage captured the moment a Deliveroo driver chased a thief down the road after his scooter was stolen outside McDonald's. The clip, filmed on Saturday (January 7), captured the scenes outside the McDonald's on Oxford Road, in Manchester city centre.
The video, shared to Reddit and with the Manchester Evening News, shows two people, one of which is on another black scooter beside the other, as they drive side by side down Chepstow Street. Moments later, the delivery driver is seen coming out of the fast food restaurant and running after them.
An onlooker who filmed the incident on Saturday afternoon said they saw two people wearing balaclavas driving down Oxford Road on a motorbike, before stopping outside McDonald's, where one of them jumped across to the other bike parked outside before speeding away.
They said: "I saw two guys with balaclavas on a moped going down Oxford Road, once they saw the moped outside McDonald's they spun around over to it. It all happened within 30 seconds and then they were gone.
"Once I stopped filming I followed round the corner to see if the guy caught up to them or needed help, but they were well down the road by then with him still running."
After the clip was shared to Reddit, many people commented saying they would've donated money to help get the driver back on the road again, as others condemned the culprits involved.
One said: "Man I feel bad for the deliveroo driver. In case the driver is reading this, I am ready to help you financially to get you back on the road" as another posted: "If someone can find this driver I’m also willing to help. I can’t do much more other than chuck a few quid in, but if enough of us do it I’m sure we can get the driver going again."
A third person added: "How scummy can you be to steal from a Deliveroo driver?"
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident. The force said it was reported the two men had approached on a scooter before riding off outside the McDonald's.
A Deliveroo spokesperson said: “We are sorry to hear about this incident - keeping our riders safe is our priority, and we will always support the police however we can in dealing with any case of a rider who may be a victim of crime while working.
"We also have a dedicated rider support team to assist riders in the event of any accident or safety concerns, and regularly advise them on how to keep safe on the road."
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "GMP received a call at approximately 4.50pm on Saturday 7 January 2023 from a witness who had seen a food delivery vehicle being stolen outside McDonalds on Oxford Road.
"It was reported two men had approached on a scooter from an unknown direction and one of the men had jumped off, before getting on a scooter belonging to a food delivery company and riding off. Enquiries are ongoing."
