Molotov cocktail thrown at restaurant in Melbourne's Southbank

Police have arrested a man after a suspected Molotov cocktail was thrown through the window of a restaurant in Southbank, in Melbourne's CBD.

Emergency services were called to Southbank Promenade, near Crown Casino, about 1am after receiving reports someone had thrown an incendiary device.

The small fire was extinguished after causing damage to an awning and tables and chairs.

A 39-year-old man was arrested shortly after, and has been charged with reckless conduct endangering persons and two counts of arson.

Police were told the man was earlier seen in the foyer of a Whiteman Street hotel where a small fire had been lit in a toilet in the hotel's reception area.

The fire was extinguished before the man was seen leaving the area and walking towards Clarendon Street.

Detectives have asked for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
