Mohamed Salah's Liverpool reinvigoration since contract creates treble chance

It's testament to the levels Mohamed Salah has routinely reached at Liverpool that some would suggest his 22 goals across the calendar year so far does not represent a vintage 12 months.

Perhaps the Egypt star - who is vying for his third successive triumph in this particular category - is being viewed unfairly merely against himself over the past 18 months when many have championed him as the planet's finest footballer at one time or another.

An exhausting Africa Cup of Nations campaign, both mentally and physically, when he played a whopping 750 minutes in total between January 11 and February 3 as the Pharaohs won every knockout game on penalties before losing to Senegal in the final on spot-kicks, no doubt contributed in a slight dip at the turn of 2022.

VOTE: Make your decision on Liverpool's Fans' Footballer of the Year

But there can be no denying that Salah remains Liverpool's main source of inspiration up top. Who else could register the quickest hat-trick in Champions League history - in just six minutes and 12 seconds - before settling a tense clash against Manchester City at Anfield with a piece of genius in the very same week?

A double against Manchester United in April was part of arguably the most enjoyable and comprehensive Anfield displays of last season from a supporters' perspective, while he also played his part in helping Liverpool lift the Carabao Cup and book their place in the FA Cup final, even if his final appearance against Chelsea was cut short with an early injury.

Salah's goal against Wolves on the final day of the Premier League could have been one of the most important of all time had City not engineered a superb comeback of their own at the same time in the closing stages against Aston Villa.

A brand new contract that makes him, officially, the highest-paid player of all time at Liverpool was well deserved over the summer and it's Salah's presence up top that offers real hope for Jurgen Klopp in the second half of a campaign that has not gone to plan so far.

Whatever Liverpool are able to achieve this season, Salah will be integral to it. And that's why he gets my vote as Liverpool's Fans' Footballer of the Year for 2022.
