Mohamed Salah is only third choice on Gary Neville's list of dream Man Utd transfers

Ex-Manchester United star Gary Neville has conceded that while Mohamed Salah is "absolutely amazing", there are two players he would rather his former side try to sign.

Salah has been widely regarded as the best player in world football over the last calendar year, with his goal tally from this season alone making for astonishing reading.

The Egypt international has bagged 29 goals and 11 assists in all competitions this term as well as guiding his national side to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, though they were eventually toppled by Senegal.

The 29-year-old's stellar form saw him receive a nomination for the 2021 Ballon d'Or, but the gong was eventually taken home by Lionel Messi for a record seventh time while Salah only came in seventh place.

Neville has confessed that though there is "no doubt" Salah is one of the most gifted players on the planet, the arrival of Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe at Old Trafford would spark more excitement in him.

"At times earlier in the season, Salah was at a level that was the best in the world, and he still could be," Neville explained to Sky Sports.

"But if you said to me I could sign one player for Manchester United tomorrow, I would still probably go for Mbappe or Haaland over Salah.

"It's not a Liverpool thing, I think Salah is absolutely amazing, but I just think Mbappe has got the ability to be out-of-this-world special.

"There is no doubt Salah is world class, but Mbappe has got something different, that edge, something that is that good, it could make him one of the true greats."

At just 23, Mbappe has already cemented his status as one of the world's best but will be reeling from Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League elimination at the hands of Real Madrid.

"In terms of excitement, in terms of thrill, in terms of speed, Mbappe is absolutely sensational," Neville added.

"He reminds me of Thierry Henry, but he’s also got a bit of Cristiano Ronaldo in him – he is ruthless."

Neville's comments came before PSG's surprise defeat against Los Blancos, but the former Old Trafford favourite insisted winning the Champions League would be the "ultimate thing" for Mbappe.

He will simply have to wait until next term to have another go - but there is every chance Mbappe could be donning the white of Los Blancos next term instead.

Neville went on to wax lyrical about Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland, a player many have tipped to rival for Mbappe for future Ballon d'Ors.

"I like Haaland’s personality, I like that fact he doesn’t care what anyone thinks," Neville claimed.

"He's got a bit of Eric Cantona in him, he's the modern-day version if you like. People call it arrogant, I get that, but he has the ability to back it up.

"You can't teach that. Football needs people like him, it needs personality.

"We want players with something about them. For every angel, we want a Haaland, a young personality who doesn’t do things perfectly.

"We want professional, well-behaved people, but we also want personality and character and people who are willing to go against the norm, that is what Haaland does."
