Mohamed Salah contract u-turn as Liverpool encouraged to make Harry Kane transfer

Liverpool started off a potentially gruelling month in a routine fashion on Saturday.

The Reds didn't have to get out of second gear to beat relegation-threatened Watford 2-0 at Anfield. It was a result that temporarily took Jurgen Klopp's side top of the Premier League table, although they were quickly usurped by Manchester City after their triumph at Burnley.

In addition to fighting on all fronts for silverware, the Reds are also in negotiations to tie down Mohamed Salah to a new contract. The Egyptian's current terms are poised to run out at the end of next season and the lack of an extension has caused some anxiousness at Anfield.

Here are your latest Liverpool headlines at the start of a hectic month on the pitch and off it.

Salah contract u-turn

Salah is reportedly set to sign a new contract with the Reds having compromised on his demands.

The Egyptian was said to be requesting a deal that would see him draw level with Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of salary, but he is now reportedly ready to soften those requests and extend his stay on Merseyside.

Salah's current deal expires at the end of next season and the lack of news over an extension has prompted some worry. However, it would appear the 29-year-old is close to giving the Liverpool faithful more positive news in a season that has been littered with special moments already.

Fowler wants Liverpool to go for Kane

Former Liverpools striker Robbie Fowler has said he would like to see the Reds move for Harry Kane if he's on the market in the summer.

The England skipper was wanted by Manchester City ahead of this season, although Tottenham Hotspur dug their heels in to keep Kane in north London. After a slow start to the season, the 28-year-old has started to find his best form again.

In his column for the Mirror, Fowler has said he would be happy to see Liverpool spend big to sign the centre-forward.

"United will be in, for sure, and this is a bit left-field, but I’ve said before that Liverpool could do worse than go for him, because he’s got that ability to drop deep like Firmino, and he can guarantee goals," he said.

"So he has a question to ask: Are Spurs closer now to winning trophies? I think objectively, and without appearing to put them down, most people would say they’re further away than before."

Title run-in examined

While both Liverpool and City have Champions League commitments to fulfil this week, Sunday's massive Premier League fixture between the two title contenders looms large.

Liverpool's 10-game winning run has put them to within a point of the holders and the two sides will face off at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in a potential season-defining showdown.

The winner of that encounter will undoubtedly carry significant momentum into the rest of the season and it will be intriguing to see if the team that slips up can claw their way back into major contention for the prize.
