Mohamed Salah breaks record for Liverpool despite defeat against Man Utd

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah won't have been happy with the Reds' result at Old Trafford, but he still broke a record on a personal level.

Salah found a late breakthrough on a frustrating evening, beating David de Gea late on, but it wasn't enough to rescue a result for Jurgen Klopp's team. Goals either side of half-time from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford ensured Manchester United ended the night with all three points, moving above Liverpool in the process.

The goal was Salah's 10th against United, with eight of those coming in the league. It won't be much consolation, though, with a flat performance from the depleted visitors ensuring they remain winless after three league games.

Salah didn't score against United in any of his first four appearances against them. The first three of those came with Jose Mourinho - his former manager at Chelsea - in the opposition dugout, and included Mourinho's very last game as United boss in December 2018.

The former Roma man got his first goal against the Red Devils during Liverpool's title-winning season of 2019-20, netting a late clincher at Anfield in a 2-0 win. Another followed at the end of the 2020-21 season in a win at Old Trafford, while he also netted twice in an FA Cup fourth round defeat.

Last season was when he really caught fire, though, netting a hat-trick at Old Trafford and two more at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp's side put nine unanswered goals past United across two games. The effort on Monday was enough for Salah to become the first player to reach double figures in matches between the two rivals.

Monday night's goal was the second Salah has scored since agreeing a bumper new contract to keep him at Liverpool until 2025. However, his team remain winless, with injuries and suspensions ensuring Klopp's men are down to the bare bones.

"It's obvious we are in a tricky situation, we get through the week with 14 players available and we have to make sure none of them get injured now," Klopp said after the game. "There are no real options left anymore, even with our situation.

"We should have won this game, I know that sounds ridiculous, but that is how I see it – we lost it and now we go from here.

"How concerned I am? I'm not sure, I am concerned about our situation but it is how it is. We deal with it and we feel we can play better, we know that. We have to accept it tonight and from tomorrow we will fight against it."
