Moffat Mountain Rescue Team back in action to help injured hillwalker

Moffat Mountain Rescue Team were back in action on Tuesday afternoon to help an injured hillwalker.

A woman from the Glasgow area broke her ankle on the Culter Fell near Biggar in the Southern Uplands

Police Scotland alerted the Moffat team and Tweed Valley MRT shortly after 1pm.

They used PhoneFind technology to locate the casualty within two minutes of the alarm being raised and were asked to assist in taking her off the fell near its summit.

Moffat team leader James Coles said: “We were also joined by Strathclyde Police MRT and HM Coastguard Rescue 199 helicopter as it was quickly determined a long stretcher carry from the hill would be required.

“On arrival at the scene the teams were assisted up the hill by local farmers and gamekeepers with quad bikes. Unfortunately, due to cloud cover and poor visibility, Rescue 199 was not able to reach the casualty location directly.”

Seventeen rescue team members were taken part-way up the hill in five waves with the aid of the helicopter to shorten the distance required to transport equipment on foot.

James added: “Moffat MRT’s paramedic was in the first wave and on, reaching the casualty, administered pain relief.

“The casualty was then packaged into a vacuum mattress, casualty bag and stretcher before being carried from the hill.

“Due to worsening weather conditions it was then decided that Rescue 199 would return to base and the casualty would be transported to hospital by road. “

The woman was evacuated to the team’s ambulance which drove to nearby Coulter where a waiting Scottish Ambulance Service staff took over.

It has been a busy month for the volunteer team which has been involved in rescuing injured hillwalkers from the Grey Mare’s Tail near Moffat and Tinto Hill near Biggar.
