Modric, de Vrij: 4 players Spurs could monitor at Qatar World Cup with view to free transfer

Tottenham Hotspur head into the World Cup break in fourth position in the Premier League having secured a late win over Leeds United at the weekend. A brace from Rodrigo Bentancur turned things around for the Lilywhites after they fell 3-2 behind to Jesse Marsch's team.

Three points means that they're now just one behind third placed Newcastle and eight adrift of league leaders Arsenal, who have played a game less. Although some supporters have been somewhat disappointed by Antonio Conte's playing style in N17, their points return at this stage of the season is higher than expected and they're on course for another Champions League finish.

They now have six weeks to regroup, but work will be going on behind the scenes to ensure that the club are in the best possible position moving forward.

With that in mind, let's take a look at who Tottenham could monitor at the World Cup with a view to potentially signing them on a free come July 1.

Marco Asensio

Asensio's agent Jorge Mendes was reportedly testing the waters for potential suitors a couple of months back. Spurs' rivals Arsenal have long been linked with a move for the Spaniard's signature but have so far failed to act on their reported interest, meaning Tottenham could swoop in.

Stefan de Vrij

De Vrij worked under Conte during the Italian's title-winning season at Inter and the Dutchman has been nothing but complimentary about Tottenham's boss ever since.

Speaking back in March, he told DAZN: "Simone Inzaghi and Conte are two important coaches because they've won. I had already worked with Inzaghi at Lazio, Conte has had a great career because he's always won. We won the title under Conte and you can see it now. Inzaghi has been working on a solid base and is doing an important season now."

Spurs need depth at centre-back, so a Bosman move could be a smart transfer.

Luka Modric

37-year-old Modric left Tottenham for Real Madrid in 2012. Three La Liga's, Five Champions League's, four Club World Cup's and a Ballon d'Or later, he's asserted himself as one of the best midfielders in the history of the game. He's not keen to retire just yet either. So, could a Spurs reunion be on the cards?

Memphis Depay

90min have reported that Spurs will be paying close attention to the Dutchman's World Cup performances as he will be available in January. The forward could be interested in leaving Barcelona on a free transfer next summer, especially considering how he's had a lack of playing time at the Nou Camp thus far this season.
