The opposition leaders suspended by the Parliament – a total of 146 now – held a protest rally from the Parliament House to Vijay Chowk today against the mass suspensions.
With the suspension of Congress’s Deepak Baij, Nakul Nath and DK Suresh today for protesting in the Lok Sabha, the count of suspensions in the lower house rose to 100. Now, only 33 opposition MPs remain eligible to attend the Lok Sabha, and 48 INDIA bloc MPs can attend Rajya Sabha in the ongoing winter session that is set to conclude on December 22.
The government has passed several crucial bills amid the mass suspensions. These include the three criminal code bills, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill; and the Telecom bill; and the Provisional Collection of Taxes Bill.
Speaking to Newslaundry, Congress’s Ranjita Ranjan said passing of crucial bills without the opposition in the House is the government’s conspiracy, and will be remembered as a “blotch in history”. MP Vivek Tankha said such laws do not have legitimacy, and are then debated on the road, “like the Farm Bills”.
The opposition has called a nationwide protest on December 22.
