Modest Mouse founding member Jeremiah Green dead at 45

Rock band Modest Mouse has confirmed the death of founding member and drummer Jeremiah Green just days after revealing he had been diagnosed with cancer.

Green was 45.

“Today we lost our dear friend Jeremiah. He laid down to rest and simply faded out,” the band said in a statement on its official social media channels.

“Please appreciate all the love you give, get, have given, and will get. Above all, Jeremiah was about love.”

Five days ago, Modest Mouse frontman Issac Brock shared on Instagram that Green had been diagnosed with cancer and that he was receiving treatment.

Former guitarist of Modest Mouse and The Smiths Johnny Marr paid tribute to his bandmate on social media.

Green founded Modest Mouse with Brock and bassist Eric Judy in 1993, lending his drumming expertise to the band's first three albums This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, The Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon & Antarctica.

In 2003, on his birthday, Green announced that he had quit Modest Mouse due to ongoing mental health issues. This meant he was absent on the band's fourth album, Good News For People Who Love Bad News — which is widely regarded as its breakthrough record.

This would be the only release Green wasn't a part of, as he returned to the band in 2004 and remained a recording and touring member until his death.

Although Modest Mouse's line up changed frequently over the years, Brock and Green were the most consistent members.

Due to Green's death, Brock is now the only original member of Modest Mouse currently active.
