Modern Tyres announces sad passing of founder Jimmy Byrne

Tributes have been paid following the death of popular and well-known Co Fermanagh businessman Jimmy Byrne.

Mr Byrne, 85, was the director and founder of Modern Tyres, Ireland's largest independent tyre retailers, establishing the business almost 60 years ago.

The company announced his passing on Saturday.

In a social media post, the firm said: "It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Jimmy Byrne. Jimmy passed peacefully at his home on Friday 3rd June.

"We extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the Byrne family; our thoughts are with them at this most difficult time.

"Jimmy founded Modern Tyres in 1965 and has been an inspirational leader and huge driving force behind the company. He will be greatly missed, by his family, all at Modern Tyres and his very many friends."

The father-of-five was originally from Dublin but moved to Enniskillen in the early 1960s where he opened his first retail/wholesale tyre depot in the Old Railway Yard in the town.

In addition to the Enniskillen depot, Modern Tyres opened in Newry (overseen by son Rory), Ballyclare (overseen by Niall), Newtownards, and Omagh (overseen by Shane).

Mr Byrne and his son Conor stayed in Enniskillen, with his daughter Siobhan also later joining the team.

The firm now has 40 depots across Ireland employing several hundred people, including a network of fast-fit centres, an alloy wheel wholesale company and a tyre wholesale company.

Mr Byrne will also be remembered as a keen hillwalker and bridge player.

A former body-builder (winning the ‘Mr. Leinster’ title in 1986), he enjoyed running marathons and completed the 1983 New York Marathon in three hours and six minutes.

Many tributes have been paid to Mr Byrne since news of his death emerged with many describing him as "a great boss and a true gentleman".

A spokesperson for Enniskillen Royal Boat Club said: "Sending our deepest sympathy to the Byrne family and all the staff at Modern Tyres on the death of Jimmy. May he rest in peace. Jimmy has been a great supporter of ERBC and Erne Head of the River for many years."

A member of Enniskillen RFC added: "Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Jimmy Byrne who gave much support to the club over the years. Our condolences to the Byrne family."

Mr Byrne's funeral will take place on Monday 6th June at 11am in St Michael’s Church, Enniskillen and all Modern Tyres depots will be closed that day as a mark of respect.
