Modern apprenticeships available with South Lanarkshire Council

A Modern Apprentice position at South Lanarkshire Council is available for young people to gain skills and experience.

The council has an opening for a Modern Apprentice in the Building Standards Team which will provide training to the appropriate National Standard through both college and on-the-job training.

Pauline Elliott, head of planning and economic development, said: “This is an excellent opening for a young person to start and develop a career that can take them through life. The Modern Apprenticeship scheme offers the best of both worlds, giving the chance to ‘earn while you learn’ and backing up the educational side with practical hands-on experience.

“We have seen many young people make a success of this opportunity and are looking forward to helping another apprentice into what can be a very rewarding career.”

The Building Standards team is responsible for a range of services including processing building warrant applications and applications for relaxation of building standards, the inspection and monitoring of developments on site, assessing any work carried out without consent and taking any action and inspecting unauthorised or dangerous buildings.

The position does not require any experience in the profession but the candidate should have one Higher at grade C or above and three National 5s at grade C or above which must include maths.

The candidate must also have an understanding of building standards, the importance of health and safety, the benefits of effective teamwork and customer care principles and a willingness to learn and adapt to the working and college environment.

The fixed-term contract is for an initial two-year apprentice position and is restricted to applicants who have recently attended a South Lanarkshire High School and/or live in the South Lanarkshire area.

Applicants must be aged 16 or over by September 30 and no older than 19 by the starting date or aged between 20 and 29 if disabled or care-experienced.

The closing date for applications is April 19, these can be made online on the myjobscotland website.

Other Modern Apprenticeships are also available at South Lanarkshire council, details on them can be found here.
