In the first full trailer for Moana 2, fans were treated to the return of beloved characters Moana and Maui, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, respectively. The trailer was unveiled at D23 to an enthusiastic audience, with Johnson and Cravalho even performing a musical number from the movie. Johnson humorously shared with the crowd that Maui will be singing once again, showcasing his vocal talents in unique keys. The film also features returning voice actors Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk.
Originally planned as a Disney+ series, Moana 2 was upgraded to a full-length feature film sequel following an announcement by Disney's chief Bob Iger. The movie is directed by David Derrick Jr. and Jason Hand. Earlier this year, a teaser trailer was released, and exclusive footage was showcased at the Annecy Animation festival.
The sequel picks up three years after the events of the first film, with Moana continuing her exploration of the seas in search of new islands and civilizations. The story emphasizes the theme of connection, highlighting Moana's belief that the ocean unites all people. The trailer premiere at D23 coincided with Disney's reveal of sneak peeks from other upcoming projects.
Additionally, Disney is working on a live-action adaptation of Moana set to release in 2026, directed by Thomas Kail. Dwayne Johnson will reprise his role as Maui in the live-action film, alongside newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia as Moana.
