Mo Salah's strange Rick and Morty-themed weapon in Golden Boot race

Liverpool striker Mo Salah has a strange connection to hit animation Rick and Morty in his quest for the 2022/23 Premier League Golden Boot.

Salah opened his goal account in the opening weekend of the season during Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Fulham and the Egyptian superstar will be hoping to beat Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo to the division's top scorer award. Adidas, who sponsor Salah, has now revealed a new pair of boots inspired by adult animation Rick and Morty.

Fans of Liverpool may have noticed Salah wearing striking green Adidas boots for the season opener, a design also worn by Lionel Messi in his first game of the season for Paris St Germain.

Last month Salah appeared in an Adidas advert featuring the animated characters to introduce the new pair of X Speedportal boots, which are also worn by Lionel Messi and superstar of the women's game, Vivianne Miedema. The boots are the latest designed by Adidas for the world's top players and are designed specifically for quick and skilful strikers

Adidas says: "Good players create time and space. Great ones leave them both behind. Unlock multidimensional speed in adidas X Speedportal."

The boots match the colour of the inter-dimensional portals seen on the animated series and Adidas says the lightweight design and new stud layout can help Salah score enough goals to secure the Golden Boot.

Salah will wear the striking green boots when Liverpool take on Crystal Palace on Monday night in the first home game of the 2022/23 season.

The X Speedportal boots are priced from £75 for fans to replicate the star's look and they are on sale on the Adidas website now.
