Mo Salah’s place among Liverpool’s greatest ever goalscorers and chances of taking record

Having finally put pen to paper on a new long-term Liverpool deal, Mohamed Salah 's focus will no doubt have now turned to further cementing his place in the club's history books.

The Egyptian finally lay ongoing speculation surrounding his future to rest on Friday by committing to a new mega-money contract at Anfield. The fresh terms will keep the 30-year-old at Liverpool until 2025 while making him the highest-paid player in the club's illustrious history, on wages which exceed a whopping £350,000-per-week.

The forward has been integral to the Reds' relentless run of success in recent seasons having contributed a mammoth 156 goals in 254 appearances since signing from Roma back in 2017. With three more years at Liverpool now secured, Salah stands in good stead to usurp some of the club's all-time greats and ascend even higher up the Reds' prestigious goalscoring charts.

“It’s great to be number nine on the list of goalscorers for the club, especially when you do it in a short time," Salah admitted. "I’ve said many times before, the most important thing is to win trophies, but when you score goals and help your teams win games, it is something to be proud of."

When probed on how good it must feel to rank among Liverpool's all-time greatest goalscorers, the Egyptian added: “Yes, especially when you do it in such a short time, as a winger, with many assists. It’s really great.”

But who currently holds the honour of Liverpool's all-time record goal-getter and just how many more times must Salah find the net to take on the iconic mantle? The legendary Ian Rush currently tops the billing, out in front as the Reds record holder having struck 346 goals in 660 games for the club - a sizeable 190 more than Liverpool's current talisman.

Come the end of his Liverpool career, where do you think Mo Salah will sit in the list of the club's all-time greatest record goalscorers? Let us know in the comments below!

While it seems unlikely Salah will be able to surpass the Welshman's remarkable total, there's every chance he could join Rush towards the top of the leaderboard. The No.11 netted 31 goals in 51 appearances for the Reds last season - a figure which happens to be his average return over his five seasons on Merseyside.

Should he continue that strike-rate over the next three years of his new deal, a further 93 goals would see the winger move on to a total of 249 for Liverpool, and up to third in the club's standings, sandwiched between the great Roger Hunt, who netted 285 goals, and Gordon Hodgson, who bagged 241.

Salah's immediate focus however, will be on picking off the other Liverpool legends who are within a much closer reach. Currently down in ninth in the club's all-time goalscoring list, last season's joint Premier League Golden Boot winner is a mere two goals behind matching the goal haul of Michael Owen.

Beyond Owen, is Kenny Dalglish who struck 172 times in Liverpool colours. Robbie Fowler sits one place ahead of the Scot on 183 goals - just three behind club icon Steven Gerrard in fifth. Billy Liddell completes the list of those ahead of Salah, fourth on 228 goals.

Though the Egyptian has openly expressed his pride at his achievements in a Liverpool shirt up until now, the winger's tenacious approach and insatiable appetite to be the best mean he will have no plans to slow up on the goalscoring front. If anything, having resolved his future, expect the forward to be more fired up than ever come the start of next campaign.

There can be no denying Salah is already assured of his place in Liverpool history books. All that remains is for the winger to determine just how high up in the club's list of greats he can now propel himself. The Egyptian King's Liverpool love affair lives on.
