MMA fighter suffers five broken ribs, punctured lung and bruised kidney in 38-second bout

MMA fighter Chance Rencountre sustained a plethora of injuries after being stopped by Andrey Koreshkov at Bellator 274 last weekend.

Things didn't go Rencountre ways in the co-main event of the card as he suffered five broken ribs, a punctured leg and bruised kidney in a 38-second stoppage loss.

Just 30 seconds into the first round of the fight, Koreshkov threw a spinning kick which Rencountre level changed to try and avoid.

But the Russian's back kick connected perfectly with his opponent's ribs which caused him to fall to the canvas and keel over in pain.

Rencountre was able to make it back to his feet and congratulate Koreshkov on his win despite the nature of his injuries.

The fighter's manager, Brian Butler, released a statement on Instagram about his injuries, thankfully reassuring fans that Rencountre is in good health.

"[Chance Rencountre] suffered five broken ribs, a punctured lung from the heel kick landed by [Andrey Koreshkov] last night," Butler wrote.

"Not the outcome we wanted but the kick was well placed and would have stopped anyone. Next time we will get a full camp and come back stronger. Chance is in good spirits and prepping for surgery.

"Thank you to the [Bellator MMA] team who has been tremendous with all their assistance. Congratulations to [Andrey Koreshkov] and his team on the victory."

Rencountre was competing in Bellator for the first time in five years, having left the promotion in 2017 and eventually signing for the UFC the following year.

The 35-year-old's UFC stint would only last 18 months as he was cut from the promotion after his stoppage loss to Lyman Good in 2019.

Rencountre went on to fight twice on the regional circuit, picking up consecutive submission wins for Fighting Alliance Championship.

His Bellator return didn't go the way he hoped, but Rencountre seemed to be in good spirits as he addressed the loss on social media.

“Feeling pretty chipper for a man with 5 broken ribs, a punctured lung half full of blood and a bruised kidney,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Not the way I’d envisioned my Bellator return playing out but congratulations to Andrey Koreshkov and a big thank you to all the Bellator MMA staff for all their hard work both pre and post-fight. I’m feeling very well taken care of."

Former welterweight champion Koreshkov extended his unbeaten run to three fights with the win as he looks to work his way back up the division's rankings.

The No.9 ranked contender called out Paul Daley - who will have his retirement bout at Bellator London in May - for his next bout in the cage.
